    Politeness: A Treasure of Dignity

Politeness is a treasure of dignity. Good manners are a virtue that reflects the true quality of a person. When someone demonstrates courtesy, respect, and humility, they naturally draw others toward them. A person with good manners is not only admired but also possesses a charm that captivates people.

A Lesson from Siem Reap: Politeness in Action

I once joined a study field trip in Siem Reap Province, Cambodia, under the theme of rural development, led by a professor from the University of Management and Economics. During the trip, we were assigned to interview families living in remote villages.

When I spoke with these families—people I had never met before—they treated me with such gentle politeness. Their words were kind and respectful, their behavior humble and considerate. They welcomed me warmly, making me feel both valued and connected. Even after I returned, I often recalled their graceful manner and the beautiful way they spoke during our conversations. I could listen to their words over and over again without ever feeling weary.

    The Contrast: Rudeness vs. Courtesy

By contrast, when a person is harsh, arrogant, boastful, and constantly self-centered, they become unpleasant to others. Their rudeness not only makes conversations uncomfortable but also creates a negative atmosphere. No one truly enjoys engaging with such people, because their behavior breeds unease rather than connection.

This is why politeness and proper manners are essential. A person who carries themselves with genuine courtesy can win the hearts of others. Everyone who meets them feels love, admiration, and a desire to build a lasting friendship. Those bonds bring joy and pride, with people wishing that the friendship lasts forever.

Of course, not everyone demonstrates such qualities. Our society has both individuals with admirable manners and those who sadly lack them.

    Actions Speak Louder Than Words

I remember another moment during the field trip. After finishing our interviews from one village to another, our vehicle slipped off the road and became stuck. Immediately, the villagers came together to help push the car, working with all their strength and unity, without complaint or hesitation.

This act of solidarity showed me that politeness is not only about words—it must also be expressed through actions.

Why Politeness Matters in Modern Society

In every era—especially in today’s modern, globalized world—politeness remains necessary. Words of courtesy and respectful behavior never lose their value.

No one wants to speak with someone who lacks manners. Even a small display of rudeness can drive people away. On the other hand, politeness elevates a person, while rudeness isolates them, often leading to setbacks in both professional and personal life. Many failures are not caused by lack of skill, but by poor relationships stemming from arrogance or disrespect.

    Politeness and Business Success

This truth applies in business as well. A good merchant knows the power of gentle words and kindness. By treating customers with warmth and respect—not just as buyers, but as valued partners who bring livelihood—they not only provide better service but also build loyalty.

Customers who feel appreciated always return. And when they return often, the business flourishes. In contrast, a merchant who speaks harshly or deceives customers will surely drive them away.

Conclusion: Politeness Is Strength, Not Weakness

Therefore, good manners are not just social niceties—they are fundamental to success in life and business. They bring trust, respect, and recognition from others.

Politeness is not a weakness; it is a strength, a timeless virtue that ensures dignity, connection, and credibility in the eyes of society.
